Well I do agree with you on some counts, Caroline. I think the story got way too much air time. MSNBC devoted almost every one of its evening shows to it this week--Hardball, Countdown, etc. It deserved some coverage in my opinion but that was way over board. The Iraqi parliament building was getting blown up and we were still listening to people blather on about Imus, for heaven's sake!

And I do agree that people should stop watching if they don't like it. Obviously the threat of that, and the loss of sponsors, was ultimately responsible for the shut-down of the show.

I also think that Jason Whitlock (sports colunnist, KC Star)made a really good point when he said that the team should quit giving Imus so much power. To allow his creepy self to ruin their achievements with 3 words is absolutely sad. They should be tougher than that and feel better about themselves, based on what they did with their season and their lives.

With all that said, I still support the firing of Imus--he'll get over it, I'm sure. I wish more people would get fired for being obnoxious when millions of viewers are watching. I think the civility of our nation has taken a hit in recent years, and that language is powerful. Yes, we do need to be nicer. We need to speak more carefully to each other. Decent language is a sign of respect in my opinion, and I'd like to see people using words more thoughtfully. Our newly elected mayor said that his wife's suggestion for a campaign strategy was to be nice to people and tell the truth. Sounds good to me. :-)

It's crazy.

Hypothetically, if he would've called the Tennessee team "inbred, toothless hillbillies" would it have caused this kind of backlash? Probably not.

I agree. It's bordering on the absurd.

Al Sharpton is just as bad as Jesse Jackson. They both are about one thing... publicity.
